Nobokov Reading

Nabokov “Good Readers & Good Writers

To be a good reader Nabokov believes you should have an open mind. You should appreciate the content of the literature and pay attention to what you are reading. If you make generalizations before reading a book, you will never fully understand the content. To be a good reader you must have imagination, memory, a dictionary, and artistic sense. We become good readers by taking the time to read and reread many pieces of material. Nabokov said, “A good reader, a major reader, an active and creative reader is a rereader.”

I agree with Nabokov, we all have to have an open mind to what we are reading. We are not all born good readers. Rereading stories helps us to better understand and comprehend what the story has to offer.

The characteristics of a good reader, in my opinion, are that the reader has the ability to imagine and create a picture in their mind of what is going on in the story. To be a good reader you must have a good memory so you can remember the story once you are done reading it. The reader should have a good vocabulary so they can comprehend the writing. Reading more can also help your vocabulary grow because you are being exposed to new words, phrases, and styles of writing.

I consider myself a good reader. However, I do feel there is always room for improvement. Personally, I believe my vocabulary could use some improvement and expansion. Reading is a passion of mine that I enjoy very much. I am always looking for new and challenging books to read. I get so involved in my books that when reading I can see a clear picture in my head of what is occurring in the story. I get so captivated by the feeling of each story that I can never seem to put a book down.
